Just Transition Communities Project
Collaboration and climate action are at the heart of our project. We work with our communities to drive and co-create the design and delivery a Just Transition in the North East.
What is the NESCAN Just Transition Communities Project?
In November 2022 NESCAN Hub was awarded a grant to deliver a pilot program of community climate assemblies and other community engagement events in the North East of Scotland.
These processes will enable communities to explore what a Just Transition means for them. The NESCAN–Just Transition Communities Project brings together local strategic project partners: tsiMoray, University of Aberdeen Just Transition Lab(UoA JTL), Aberdeen for a Fairer World(AFW/ MDEC), Open Source, Go Deep Scotland, Community Chartered Network (CCN) and NESCAN Hub as well as other specialist service providers/allied organisations such as Envirolution and Ten Feet Tall among others.
OUR PRINCIPLES ARE:
Inclusivity
All parts of the community are engaged and involved in the process of creating their own community action plan.
Consensus
Our Communities and stakeholders have confidence that the deliberative processes used are effective.
Motivation
Local residents feel that their participation in community events and processes is worthwhile.
Continuity
Community plans and agreements lead to progress, achieving outcomes and change.
Project Vision
Building belief and strength in community voice and action. Sharing expertise, power and creative solutions towards achieving a fairer greener future for all.
How to take action in your community
You, as an individual, can have a massive effect on creating grounds for change, both in your own community and in the wider world.
Working together we can build resilience and enable our communities to cope with climate change, and work together to mitigate it.
While governments and big businesses need to do more, local groups have an important role to play. Engaging with the hearts, heads and hands of the local community is crucial.
Organising a community event to address concerns and build resilience within your community is the first step. Below are some valuable resources, tools, kits and handbooks that can help you to understand how to begin your journey, plan the framework, seek guidance, and ultimately succeed.
Our Toolkits
Communities in the North East are aware of the need to take action on climate change. Often People may feel overwhelmed by the scale and complexity of the issues raised, and don’t feel empowered to take action.
The Just Transition Communities Project aims to develop a series easy-to-use tools and resources to help you to:
- Understand your local situation and take steps to make a difference
- Consider diversity of opinions and approaches
- Achieve action at various levels
- Look for creative ways forward that are unique to you, not a predefined path
Other Toolkits
The three resources below outline various frameworks, routes, approaches and tools to consider and utilise at any point in your journey. Click on them to view them.
