At the beginning of March, Scottish Rural Action ran its first residential for young adults, which brought together about 60 young people aged 16-30 in Inverness for a weekend of discussions, workshops, and learning. NESCAN Hub’s Community Development Officer, Vicky, attended with a young person from Aberdeenshire who sits on her local community council.

We joined the five YLAGs (Youth Local Action Groups)—Outer Hebrides YLAG, Orkney YLAG, Cairngorms Youth LAG, Youth Action Fife, and Forth Valley & Lomond YLAG plus young people and CLLD staff from Shetland, Argyll & Bute, the Highlands, Moray, and Aberdeenshire—who like us are eager to develop their own YLAGs.
We listened to invited experts from the Scottish Government, as well as the great wisdom and experience in the room from people who live and work in rural areas of Scotland. On Saturday morning, they had arranged a variety of study trips, encompassing everything from a beach clean to Zine making. We went to visit an organic farm, where we learnt about regenerative agriculture and discussed how young people can be supported if they want to go into farming.
Invited MSPs attended their final session, where the young people were able to speak directly about the issues that affect them and where and how they would like to see action. These discussions were broad ranging, commenting on everything from support for young carers and young people’s mental health, through to how the consultation process can be improved.
Overall, the event was a fantastic example of how we can listen to, equip, and empower young people. As well as having their voices heard on the weekend, they will continue to work on their priorities and take action through the Rural Youth Action Networks. Find out more about what they are up to on the Scottish Rural Action website.
